It’s something that I keep seeing over and over again when I look at search engine traffic in the electronic cigarette industry, in many forms:
Can you smoke electronic cigarettes on a plane?
Are e cigarettes OK to take on a plane?
Can you vape on airplanes?
Can you smoke vapor cigs on a plane?
Do e cigs set off smoke alarms on airplanes?
And over and over again — seriously, looking through my Google analytics I have over 400 different keyword strings that contain the word “plane” that have brought traffic. It’s insane.
So here it is definitively, the answer to your question.
I say it many times on this site that electronic cigarettes can be smoked anywhere. And I do literally mean ANYWHERE. I get asked the above question about smoking an e cigarette on airplane time and again. My answer always is, I don’t see why not — there’s no smoke, no fire or ignition needed, there’s no odor – I don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t be able to vape on an airplane.
However, I do proceed with caution when I smoke an e cig on a plane. I have smoked e cigs many times while flying. The first time I was able to get into first class (that doesn’t happen often), and I asked the flight attendant before take-off if it was OK with her, and she seemed familiar with it and gave me her approval. I showed it to my neighbors so they wouldn’t be alarmed when they saw the vapor and got spooked. You can never be too careful these days, especially with everyone a little more fearful in the skies in this post-9/11 world.
Other times, when I don’t want to create any kind of hassle, I just take my e cigs in the airplane bathroom. I have a few puffs, get my fill, and head back to my seat. Since there is no smoke, there is no danger of an e cig setting off an airplane bathroom smoke detector or alarm. Plus, while I’m in there, there’s nobody seeing me, so I don’t have to worry about anybody getting freaked out seeing the plume of vapor in the air. I’ll again restate that there really aren’t reasons why you shouldn’t be able to smoke an e cigarette on a plane, but I’m not one to get into any confrontation, so I usually just avoid it entirely and do it in the airplane bathroom.
So . . . that’s my etiquette when it comes to vaping on an airplane. Now how about an example of what NOT to do. There’s a hilarious story over on the V2 Cigs blog, which can be found here. This blog post tells about a Mr. Pogos Paul Sefilian. He was arrested recently after acting out on an airplane ride on a Southwest Airlines flight. He had been smoking his e cig before the plane took off and this caught the eye of the flight attendant, who advised him that he could not do that on the plane. They got into an argument, but Sefilian finally conceded and put his e cig away. However, soon after the plane took off, he grabbed his e cigarette again and began using it, contrary to the instructions from the flight attendant. The flight attendant again told him to put the e cig away, further angering Sefilian. He then took his anger to a whole other level and began throwing pretzels and peanuts at the flight attendant as well as the door to the cockpit, puffed out his chest and acted like a buffoon.
As you would expect, once the plane landed Mr. Sefilian was met by some FBI agents who were ready to remove him from the plane and immediately place him under arrest, where he was taken to Utah jail until his hearing.
The lesson in this – don’t act like Mr. Sefilian. I’ve answered above whether or not can you smoke an electronic cigarette on an airplane – sure you can, but be smart about it. If you want to vape on the plane, ask the flight attendant ahead of time and alert those around you so they don’t get weirded out. If someone asks you to stop, please do so. Getting your e-smoke isn’t worth the hassle or consequences that Mr. Sefilian faces.
